Tropical Viticulture - Gliricidia as Grapevine Support Trellis in Indonesia

Grapevines are climbing plants, without a proper support or trellising, grapevine will grow on a soil surfaces, that will cause disease and others problem, like berries rot, leaf rot and others disease.

On developed grape growing country, usually grapevines are supported with trellising, made from steel, concrete or in lesser extent, with thick hardwood log. Steel pole, then wired to each others, so grapevine will climb, and get structural support from it.

concord grapes cultivated in US, with steel post.

In Indonesia, using a wooden log, or even a log that originating from another hardwood tree, cannot be used as grapevines trellising, because high humidity and temperature of tropical climate, make microorganism and any others wood eater bugs, thrive in this climate. The bug will destroy even a hardwood, so wood trellis have will ages quickly.

Grapevine are long term investment, it have typical of 30 years of productivity, so the only things that can support grapevine trellising are steel or concrete.
But steel and concrete post, are expensive to build. In Indonesia, most grape farmers, are low in capital, to start an advanced vineyard system with steel or concrete trellising system. So without any breakthrough ideas, cultivation of grapevine in Indonesia, will be slower, than any other developed countries, with initials high capital terms.

Indonesian viticulturist, are not stopped just because of that capital matters, instead they using a life tree, as a trellising post, usually, a quickstick tree, locally called gamal tree, it have scientific name of Gliricidia sepium.

Gliricidia sepium plant grow in Maluku, Indonesia.

Quickstick are tree originating from West Africa. It is a legume tree, so it can associate with nitrogen fixing microorganisms. It have many purposes, as a fodder, canopy shades for coffee tree, life fencing, and others. In Central Maluku, it used mostly for barrier between local private owned land, and also as vanilla vine climbing support, for many years already.

Because quickstick are living tree, it have several advantages such as, longer ages, resistant to high humidity and high temperature, tropical climate like in Indonesia, and it also have few diseases and pest to worry about.

3 to 4 months old quickstick, for grapevine support.

Quickstick are usually propagated by cutting of hardened wood. At monsoon seasons, it is grow very quick and easily. But if it being cut and planted at dry seasons, it needs to be watered every other hot days.
Before it can be used as life trellis for grapevine, it need to be planted 6 to 8 months ahead of grapevine planting date, so the root, already extend, and it will firm and strong enough to be wired with nylon rope, for grapevine support.

Steel wire cannot be used, as trellising support, because it will damage the quickstick trunk, and eventually can kill it.
Because only nylon rope that used to wire the support of grapevine, so planting spacing between grapevine, on a planting rows, need to be close to each others, because if too far planting distance are used between grapevine, nylon rope will be easily sway, if there is a strong wind and, when grapevine start to bear fruits, because the weight of berries and grapevine itself.

Typical planting spacing are between, 1,5 meter to 2 meter, between grapevine in a row.

Canopy management of quickstick need to be managed properly, routine trimming of the tree is a must, to make clear passage for sunlight to have good penetration on grapevine leaves, otherwise, grapevine will be shaded and photosynthetic will be slower. Especially on monsoon, where high rainfall occur, causing high humidity and grapevine will easily infected with many diseases and pest.

The expensive steel and concrete post for support of grapevines trellising, can be replaced with cheap quickstick as an alternatives life trellising support. As long as canopy management of quickstick and vineyard sanitations are managed properly, tropical grapevine cultivation can be done, without the need of initial high capital investments.
