Grapevine cultivation in Indonesia are not a new ideas anymore, there has been many established vine growers across Indonesia, with main production areas in Bali, Probolinggo and Malang, in East Java.

There are lot grape farmer or viticulturist, that making grapevine as main crops to produce household income, like in Bali.

There is also many plant hobbyist that grow grapevine, because they think, it is an exotics plant, or just be shades for houses, from the heat of tropics sun.

But most of the farmer has limited knowledge about kind of grapevine they planted, usually they only know about grape berries producing plants, but actually there are 2 kind of species and its breed, that widely planted in Indonesia, that is Vitis vinifera, and Vitis labrusca.

Vitis vinifera, are grapevine that produce grape berries, used to make wines, this kind of species originated from around southern part of Caspian Sea, in Central Asia, slowly to be famous in all over Europe, to making of wine, especially in France. So, because of it, many people call it European grapevine, but it also cultivated widely for table grape, for fresh fruits market.

Vitis labrusca, first encountered by European settlers when colonizing America, founded in eastern coast of north America, that is why, it is called, American Grapevine, widely cultivated for fresh fruits, making jams and jelly, and on rare occasions for wine, although the wine quality is said to be lower than, its European wine counterparts, because of ‘foxy’ aroma.

Vitis labrusca leaves(left), are thicker and rough compared to Vitis vinifera(right) leaves. Others than that, typical American grapes leaves are usually larger than European ones.

                                                                              


Underside leaves of Vitis labrusca(left), have small whitish hairy and feel rough, but on Vitis vinifera(right), there are no hairy, and its glossy.
                                                                              


Colour of young Vitis labrusca(left) leaves, are pale and green, while Vitis vinifera(right), have brilliant red to brownish colour, and it is shiny.
 
                                                                             


Flowers petals or pedicel, on Vitis labrusca(left), usually only consist of one berry, but pedicel on Vitis vinifera(right), consist of many berries.

                                                                              


On  trunk of Vitis labrusca(left), on averages have longer internodes compared with Vitis vinifera(right).

Vitis labrusca, has typical low sugar content on its berries, slightly sour taste, and if berries are pressed against the thumbs, the pulp will slip out of the skin, that is why, another name for this grapes is ‘slip skin grape’. This species, are resist better to humid climate, resist well against many grape-borne disease, and especially, it is resistant to phyloxera. This grapevine also grow fast and very vigor, that is why, it is also used for rootstock, for European grapes.

Vitis vinifera, on the other hand, is very hard to adapt to new climate, especially in humid climate, like Indonesia, but it have better sugar content on its berries, so it is sweeter. Also smells good(aromatic). Not resistant well against many diseases, and very easily infected with phyloxera. It grow slowly compared to its American cousins.
